Cultural Fest

August 22nd, 2005 by Nick Verwymeren

Townsville has been a busy place over the past few weekends. Cultural Fest was a fairly big event that we were able to help out at. It was held down at The Strand, and had many cultures represented. I can’t say it was the best cultural fest I’ve been to but it was a lot of fun none the less.

As a volunteer I stood at one of the many entrances with Christina,Cultural Fest greeting people and ‘encouraging’ them to donate. It’s really funny because when there was no one at the entrance people would just walk right by the donation box, but when we stood by it I guess people just felt guilty and gave money. Whatever the case it seemed to work.

Many of the staff here also helped out with sound and lighting. We have good realtionship with one of the biggest light and sound companies in Townsville. Matt, the owner of ‘Talkin Audio’ really appreciated the help. He also going to be helping us with IWT (Impact World Tour) when it comes here in 2006.

This weekend we are again helping him out with setup and takedown of the River Festival. I’m still not sure what the River Fest is about but I’m going on Sunday to help tear down the main stage. They are running a film fest that we as SDC (School of Digital Communications) interns were going to enter, but then realised that we already had enough on our plate.

It’s been great to see how RTO (Reef to Outback) is finding new ways to bless businesses here in Townsville and the surrounding community.
