A few mornings ago, Nick and I watched over the internet as the first African American president marched down the streets of Washington D.C. with his wife. Chills ran up and down my arms as I thought, I am watching history take place. That night, I sat down with some of my friends and listened to his first declaration to the world as the 44th American President.
Minutes later, we watch as news coverage files in from the rest of the world – Africans, Israelis, Iraqis, Europeans and Americans rejoice over what all hope will be winds of change. Regardless of your opinion of this man, you cannot deny that he has already united the world, if even for a brief moment.

An Australian TV announcer said he was standing on the Washington Mall, surrounded by a group of African-Americans, so moved by the moment that they were weeping. Years of longing finally realized in a young man with a desire for good.

His inauguration speech, though reviewed as more “business like” than most inducted presidents, is a speech that I will always remember. He spoke of values and foundations that have been long forgotten. He spoke of creating a government that will regain the trust of its’ people. He encouraged Americans to no longer deny that the rest of the world is hurting. He spoke of cutting down his senior staff’s pay, proving that no man is above being responsible in hard times.

In his first day in office, Barack Obama told the American people that he was going to be honest with them. He claimed that secrets have gone on for too long and it was time for a change. He spoke of being above reproach, caring for the poor and sick, loving our enemies and seeking an end to injustice.

For a long time, I thought that the world had to get worse before it got better. But what’s to say that it can’t get better from here? I don’t necessarily think that one man could be the answer, but I think he can be part of it. I like the integrity of Mr. Obama so far and I can guess that he has millions of prayers being shot up to heaven for him.

No matter our political persuasion, we need to support our leaders.

I think this one’s on to a good start.
