Missing the Fury of Larry

March 24th, 2006 by Nick Verwymeren

As many of you may have already heard cyclone Larry hit the coast of Australia on Monday (March 20). It was a category 5 with winds gusting to 290KM/h. The good news is that Townsville was spared and was only hit by the bottom edge of the cyclone. The bad news is that that town of Innisfail (pop 8000), which is located 250KM north of here, was destroyed. Right now our base is looking at ways we can help out. We probably will not be able to help on a large scale, but they have been looking at sending a few people.

Sunday we spent part of the day preparing the base for the storm. We took down the large tarp covering the deck and moved everything we could find inside. We’re still waiting because there is another cyclone just off the coast brewing in the Pacific. It looks like noting will come of it though. Please keep Innisfail in your prayers as many people have lost everything. I’ve made a short video of our preparation for the storm and when the acutal cyclone hit.
